Before starting this or any other exercise program, you should consult your doctor if you are in any doubt about the suitability of the activity for your level of fitness. Especially if you are pregnant, or those with pre-existing health problems or balance impairments.
Start out slow and progress sensibly, at a pace that is comfortable for you. Perform all of the exercises exactly as described on your introduction demonstration video, to ensure that you do not strain or injure joints and muscles through incorrect techniques. If you are unsure, The Punch Clinic staff will be happy to help you improve your technique.
Monitor your heart rate while you exercise and keep your pulse rate within your target heart rate zone. Follow the instructions in the booklets, on this web site or check out the posters in the attack rooms for information about taking your pulse and determining your target heart rate zone, or ask any member of The Punch Clinic staff to demonstrate.
Do not over exert yourself with this or any other exercise program. Listen to your body and respond to any reactions it may have. You must distinguish discomfort, like fatigue, from pain, which hurts. If you experience any pain or tightness in your chest, an irregular heartbeat or shortness of breath, STOP exercising immediately. Inform a member of staff and be sure to consult your doctor before continuing.
Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before, during and after your workout. Try not to gulp lots of water in one go, but rather take regular small drinks or sips. Remove all jewelry and wear appropriate clothing. For reasons of safety, we recommend you remove all jewelry, especially rings, before you begin to box. Your clothing should be comfortable and lightweight. Wear athletic shoes, such as running or aerobic trainers. DO NOT use the SLAM MAN(TM)with bare hands or feet.
Always wear boxing gloves and wrist straps while hitting the SLAM MAN(TM). Boxing gloves and wrist straps will protect your hands. They are included in the room-rate and are also available to buy from The Punch Clinic. Warm up and stretch before working out. Follow the brief warm up stretches, followed by practicing the punches you have learned at a slower pace and with a shorter range of movement. You must remember to cool down in the same fashion including stretches.
